Process

My drawn art is a form of time travel. I surf the material of over a thousand years of human experience when I draw. Sometimes this will be anchored by using a quill pen and handmade ink. On other occasions the content will be shaped by daydreaming about similarities between then and now, or imagined futures.

I’m working on some circle designs at the moment. Inspiration has been drawn from depictions of St Michael (there are many of these in Dumfries) as well as early medieval manuscripts. I’ve used more contemporary perspectives though to ‘open’ St John’s gospel book.

The symbolism of a book has varied throughout time. When the great illuminated Gospels were first made in these Isles they were crafted for display as well as reading. Like a graphic novel they provide a medium for communication where the drawing of the book as well as the text in the book both communicate. In a similar way, perhaps, to God communicating to creation through creating – rather than beaming back to the mother ship leaving a dog eared instruction manual to be deciphered!

So, anyway here are two discs. One featuring St Michael and the other St John the evangelist.
